School of Optometry, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

The School of Optometry (SO) is a part of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Established in 1978, the School runs Hong Kong's only degree programme in Optometry for professional qualification as optometrists. Our mission is to undertake cutting edge research, and the teaching of the highest academic standard in optometry, and to contribute to promotion and delivery of high quality vision care in Hong Kong. SO offers students the unique opportunity to gain clinical experience with real clients within the supervised environment of its three Optometry Clinics to complement their classroom learning. SO focuses on two strategic areas of research that are of particular concern in Hong Kong, namely myopia and the ageing eye. SO established the Centre for Myopia Research to prevent or halt its development. Moreover, our ageing Eye research group studies the normal ageing processes that lead to deterioration of vision so as to understand how to control these processes to preserve vision in the elderly, especially important in view of the increase  in the senior proportion of Hong Kong's population. Our main Optometry Clinic and two satellite clinics serve not only staff and students from the University but also members of the public, enabling our students to gain clinical experience in a controlled, professional setting from a representational cross section of society.
